Sun Zoom Spark Fanzine
June 1994
Hey! There's no way this band are homemade. Ask Michael Stipe and the ubiquitous Bob Mould, their respective producers. According to Ruth, "We owe a lot to Michael for recording our demos in the first place, but we've moved on since then." She adds "Bob was a great influence on us in his Husker Du days, he certainly captured our sound when he produced 'Hot Boxing'." Hailing from Watkinsville, but very much part of the Athens scene in Georgia (there are a lot of parallels with Vic Chesnutt, Drummer David McNair once toured with him). They rose to prominence on Belgian label PIAS and were on tour with Flop and The Posies when I caught hold of them. We, i.e. Linda, Ruth, Mike Muso and myself, talked for ages about the Lemonheads, Juliana Hatfield, CBGB's, Bill Clinton, the price of cigarettes and of course Michael and Bob, but I'm not going to repeat any of it because it was private. So there! Nah! Nah! Nah! The gig was packed, even before The Posies took the stage. A clutch of Magnapop groupies were huddled round the front. We were treated to a feast of large pop. "Slowly, Slowly", "Lay It Down" and the "Idiot Song" amongst the tasty morsels of racous rock 'n' roll. Catch hold of their demos if you can, especially "Guess" and "Favorite Writer". Oh, and also "13" (the Big Star cover) which they didn't play when I saw them. Boo Hoo! And check out Shannon's space-hopping shenanigans on bass. Radical man! Zowee! This band are "little celebrities for sure!"
