There isn't enough luck on the planet to explain the success of Magnapop. After playing at 1991's NMS and distributing only one demo for the duration of the week-long event, Magnapop was picked to play in Rotterdam at "The Year Punk Broke" Festival with real live MTV stars like Dinosaur Jr. and Nirvana. Since then, they have played with the Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth and had several of their tracks produced by Michael Stipe.

Their latest album, Hot Boxing, was produced by Sugar's Bob Mould at Austin's Pedernales Studio. Not girlie, although they are a Juliana fave, I prefer to describe them as hooky, as in two-chords and mega-hooks.

There once was a major-label geek who passed on this two-girl, two-guy act with the explanation that their "female artist quotient was maxed out." Make that same mistake, and prepare to be laughed at twice as hard.
